What types of foster care are there?

You can be placed in foster care in any of the following:
• Foster home with relatives.

• Foster home with foster parents, which is a family setting, the foster parents may have other foster children or their own biological children.

• Treatment foster home that provides special care to children with behavioral, emotional and/or medical needs.

• Group home or residence that provides more services or supervision than a foster home would

• Supervised independent living program (SILP) that is usually an apartment, which may be with at least one other youth. This is a program for youth who are learning to make the transition from foster care to living on their own as an adult.

Foster parents or caregivers are trained and have background checks. They also will know what you and your family need to do under the court approved plan, so you may be returned to your parent, be adopted or live independently once you are discharged from foster care.
