Here are some terms you should know:

• Community colleges are smaller schools that offer students certificate programs or a two-year degree. Some go to a community college first, earn an associate’s (two-year) degree and then transfer to a four-year college to earn a bachelor’s (four-year) degree. A community college’s curriculum is sometimes developed around the needs of the community’s employers. Normally, you live at home while you’re attending these schools, so you can attend school around your work schedule or your family responsibilities.

• Four-year colleges offer bachelor’s degrees in many different majors. Typically, you live on campus or near the school. They can be part of a university.

• Trade programs offer instruction in particular trades at places like community colleges. Some unions also offer programs so young men and women can learn the trade, like the United Associated of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry.

• Public schools and colleges are those owned by your state. Private schools are operated independent of any state government. Typically, private schools are more expensive than public schools.
