Responsible Citizenship
Precinct
A district, as of a city, marked out for governmental or administrative purposes, or for police protection.

Green Card
An official document issued by the U.S. government to aliens, allowing them to work legally in the United States.

Classified Advertisements
An advertisement in a newspaper, magazine or the like generally dealing with offers of or requests for jobs, houses, apartments, used cars and the like.


Legal Help
Social Security Number (SSN)
A federal taxpayer identification number for Americans. A SSN number is required to get a job and claim taxes or other tax benefits.

Mediation
An informal process in which an impartial person (the mediator) works with the parties to try to resolve the lawsuit in a way that is acceptable to both.

Dispute Resolution
A means for resolving disputes that exists outside the state and federal judicial systems. Common dispute resolution techniques include negotiation, arbitration, mediation, the mini-trial and summary jury trial, and private judge trials. Generally, these methods are faster, less expensive and less adversarial than a court trial.

Pro se
Representing oneself; serving as one’s own lawyer.

Civil Case
A case that does not involve a crime brought by one person against another.

A network of personal computers, each of which acts as both client and server, so that each can exchange files and e-mail directly with every other computer on the network. Each computer can access any of the others, although access can be restricted to those files that a computer's user chooses to make available.

Copyright Laws
The exclusive right to make copies, license, and otherwise exploit a literary, musical or artistic work, whether printed, audio, video, etc.

Infringement
An encroachment on a patent, copyright or other special privilege.


Foster Facts
Guardian Ad Litem (GAL)
A person appointed by a court as guardian of an infant or other person to act on his or her behalf in a particular action or proceeding.

Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)
CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to watch over and advocate for abused and neglected children to make sure they don’t get lost in the overburdened legal and social service system or languish in an inappropriate group or foster home.

Comfortable Housing
Chafee Independent Living Services
Independent living services provided to young people to assist them as they transition to adulthood. This program provides services for after care youth ages 18-21 who have exited care at age 18 or after, but have not reached age 21.
